Vestibular Clinic

Vestibular rehabilitation is a speciality area of physiotherapy that helps address the various problems caused by vestibular or inner ear disorders. Willemien has over 20 years of experience working in this area. She can assess, diagnose and treat various vestibular disorders such as:

  • Concussion
  • BPPV (Vertigo)
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Vestibular Neuritis or Labyrinthitis
  • Acoustic Neuroma
  • Persistent Postural Dizziness
  • Cervicogenic Dizziness

Most vestibular disorders go undiagnosed for many months to years. This is because the signs and symptoms can be very subtle initially for some of the conditions. We see clients describe a very gradual reduction in confidence and independence over a long period of time in some cases. The symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Dizziness
  • Feeling off- balanced
  • Feeling as if you are floating or as if the world is spinning
  • Blurred vision
  • Disorientation
  • Falling or stumbling
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • A feeling of fullness in your ears
  • Tinnitus (Ringing in the ear)
  • Brain Fog
  • Hearing Loss
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Poor concentration
  • Reduced tolerance to screen time

Remember that vestibular problems have a wide range of symptoms and severity. Everyone’s case looks slightly different. If you have been struggling with some of these issues, make sure you get yourself assessed by Willemien. She will do a thorough assessment and discuss possible diagnosis and treatment plans for your problem.

Concussion Treatment

At FamilyPhysio we are geared to help concussion patients back to recovery.

Concussion is a serious medical condition resulting from head trauma, causing the brain to move rapidly within the skull. As a Vestibular Physiotherapist, Willemien specializes in concussion treatment in Papamoa, providing essential care for those affected.

Failure to manage post-concussion recovery properly poses risks such as post-concussion syndrome, mental health issues, reinjury, and concussive convulsions. Recognizing symptoms is crucial:

Physical Symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Neck pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light/sound
  • Balance problems

Emotional Symptoms:

  • Irritability
  • Sadness
  • Anxiety
  • Emotional sensitivity

Cognitive Symptoms:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Brain fog
  • Slowed thinking

While most symptoms resolve within 7-10 days, recovery may take longer for children and adolescents. Athletes eager to return to sports may overlook symptoms; a gradual return with professional guidance is vital.

Due to the evolving nature of concussion, timely assessment is crucial after head or neck trauma. Don’t hesitate to schedule an assessment to ensure proper care and recovery.
